Smith Places 3rd in Manta Emotion Cup.

Tommy Smith flew back into Australia yesterday after his two week stint competing and promo’ing his way around Japan. After Tom’s 2nd place in the Morey Flipper Cup a week earlier Tom finished 3rd in the Manta Emotion Cup leaving him as the current tour leader on the Japanese tour. “I freaking love the place. I am going to go back in October and win the whole damn thing.” Claimed Smith.

Now home it’s straight back to business. Tom jumped a flight to scoop into some Shark Island gold this morning with Sydney buddy Harry Dixon.

More Japan shots of Tommy to come.

Hey mate!
Trip is going sick, I love this place. I ended up scoring second on the weekend at the Morey Flipper Cup. Everyone was stoked. I was loving the result and I met a gorgeous girl, ha ha. Living like a full rockstar over here. Going into Tokyo Thursday night to scope out a few more babes.. The Japanese love their beers, I have been drinking a little bit cause they insist but don’t stress my minds on the job.. The Manta Emotion Cup is on this Saturday so I will let you know how I go over the weekend, I want to win this one. Last weekend I was beat by a little Japanese small wave machine, him and another dude hassled the shit outta me in the water but everyone is really kind on land.
Speak soon......yew!!!

Johnny rules his local.

Mad props go out Shark Island local and all round shred head John Showell after placing a respectable 4th in this years Shark Island event. Johnny is currently sitting in 13th position on the IBA and still within striking distance for the remainder of the year.

Tom Smith Update

Gold Coaster Tom Smith has spent the last week hanging out at Manta HQ working with Manta shaper/team manager Reon Fisher on some new rides. Tommy is gearing up for his upcoming trip to Japan, where he will be competing in the Manta Emotion Cup held on the 26th and 27th July, Fukushima, Japan, and also the Morey Flipper Cup held in Chiba.

“The purpose of Tom’s trip to Japan is not only for the promotion of Manta but to encourage more Japanese males to take up the sport", said Reon. "Japan is one of the only countries in the world where bodyboarding is heavily female orientated. I think Tommy will be able to showcase the more hardcore, technical aspect of the sport that will hopefully encourage more males to the sport. Originally we had planned for John Showell to go over for the events, but we didn’t want to disrupt his Shark Island training. Tom became available for the trip and we thought the Japanese girls will love his blond wig, haha. It should be fun times for Tom as he is the face of the contest.”

Tom was equally as excited as Reon:  “My original plan for my trip to Cronulla was to qualify for the contest. After a third round bomb-out I was devastated. When Reon told me about the Japan trip I was amped on the idea. I now plan on focusing all my energy that I had planned for the Island into taking out the Japan events. I've got some new boards, so I am chomping at the bit to get them in the water and get ready for Japan.”

W.A.’s Brendon Backshall has been over at Manta HQ working on his new rides and is stoked with the way his new stock boards are looking.
“I am so happy with the look and feel of my new boards. Reon (Manta shaper) and I worked on getting a nice clean template for all conditions and it has been working great.” Brendon timed his trip to the East Coast well and has been scoring all over the South Coast, linking up with video lens man Todd Barnes for his upcoming feature film “Thrash”.

Cronulla’s Johnny Showell is also amping on his new boards. “I have been training hard for this year’s Shark Island contest and with the new CCT core in my boards, it works great for flex and speed out the Island. Fingers crossed we get a good swell during the waiting period.”

Tommy Smith, fresh back from a trip to South Oz with 2x World Champ Damian King, is determined on qualifying for this years Shark Island contest. “Everything feels right at the moment. My boards and equipment are working well, I feel fit and like my surfing is at the top of it’s game.” With determination like this and the skill level of Tommy’s riding, he is a near certainty to qualify.

Manta’s new 08/09 boards are avaliable in all good surf retailers now.
